Be Happier: 10 Things to Stop Doing Right Now

Sometimes the route to happiness depends more on what you don't do.

Happiness--in your business life and your personal life--is often a matter of subtraction, not addition.

Consider, for example, what happens when you stop doing the following 10 things:

1. Blaming.

People make mistakes. Employees don't meet your expectations. Vendors don't deliver on time.

So you blame them for your problems.

But you're also to blame. Maybe you didn't provide enough training. Maybe you didn't build in enough of a buffer. Maybe you asked too much, too soon.

Taking responsibility when things go wrong instead of blaming others isn't masochistic, it's empowering--because then you focus on doing things better or smarter next time.

And when you get better or smarter, you also get happier.

2. Impressing.

No one likes you for your clothes, your car, your possessions, your title, or your accomplishments. Those are all "things." People may like your things--but that doesn't mean they like you.

Sure, superficially they might seem to, but superficial is also insubstantial, and a relationship that is not based on substance is not a real relationship.

Genuine relationships make you happier, and you'll only form genuine relationships when you stop trying to impress and start trying to just be yourself.

3. Clinging.

When you're afraid or insecure, you hold on tightly to what you know, even if what you know isn't particularly good for you.

An absence of fear or insecurity isn't happiness: It's just an absence of fear or insecurity.

Holding on to what you think you need won't make you happier; letting go so you can reach for and try to earn what you want will.

Even if you don't succeed in earning what you want, the act of trying alone will make you feel better about yourself.

4. Interrupting.

Interrupting isn't just rude. When you interrupt someone, what you're really saying is, "I'm not listening to you so I can understand what you're saying; I'm listening to you so I can decide what I want to say."

Want people to like you? Listen to what they say. Focus on what they say. Ask questions to make sure you understand what they say.

They'll love you for it--and you'll love how that makes you feel.

5. Whining.

Your words have power, especially over you. Whining about your problems makes you feel worse, not better.

If something is wrong, don't waste time complaining. Put that effort into making the situation better. Unless you want to whine about it forever, eventually you'll have to do that. So why waste time? Fix it now.

Don't talk about what's wrong. Talk about how you'll make things better, even if that conversation is only with yourself.

And do the same with your friends or colleagues. Don't just be the shoulder they cry on.

Friends don't let friends whine--friends help friends make their lives better.

6. Controlling.

Yeah, you're the boss. Yeah, you're the titan of industry. Yeah, you're the small tail that wags a huge dog.

Still, the only thing you really control is you. If you find yourself trying hard to control other people, you've decided that you, your goals, your dreams, or even just your opinions are more important than theirs.

Plus, control is short term at best, because it often requires force, or fear, or authority, or some form of pressure--none of those let you feel good about yourself.

Find people who want to go where you're going. They'll work harder, have more fun, and create better business and personal relationships.

And all of you will be happier.

7. Criticizing.

Yeah, you're more educated. Yeah, you're more experienced. Yeah, you've been around more blocks and climbed more mountains and slayed more dragons.

That doesn't make you smarter, or better, or more insightful.

That just makes you you: unique, matchless, one of a kind, but in the end, just you.

Just like everyone else--including your employees.

Everyone is different: not better, not worse, just different. Appreciate the differences instead of the shortcomings and you'll see people--and yourself--in a better light.

8. Preaching.

Criticizing has a brother. His name is Preaching. They share the same father: Judging.

The higher you rise and the more you accomplish, the more likely you are to think you know everything--and to tell people everything you think you know.

When you speak with more finality than foundation, people may hear you but they don't listen. Few things are sadder and leave you feeling less happy.

9. Dwelling.

The past is valuable. Learn from your mistakes. Learn from the mistakes of others.

Then let it go.

Easier said than done? It depends on your focus. When something bad happens to you, see that as a chance to learn something you didn't know. When another person makes a mistake, see that as an opportunity to be kind, forgiving, and understanding.

The past is just training; it doesn't define you. Think about what went wrong, but only in terms of how you will make sure that, next time, you and the people around you will know how to make sure it goes right.

10. Fearing.

We're all afraid: of what might or might not happen, of what we can't change, or what we won't be able to do, or how other people might perceive us.

So it's easier to hesitate, to wait for the right moment, to decide we need to think a little longer or do some more research or explore a few more alternatives.

Meanwhile days, weeks, months, and even years pass us by.

And so do our dreams.

Don't let your fears hold you back. Whatever you've been planning, whatever you've imagined, whatever you've dreamed of, get started on it today.

If you want to start a business, take the first step. If you want to change careers, take the first step. If you want to expand or enter a new market or offer new products or services, take the first step.

Put your fears aside and get started. Do something. Do anything.

Otherwise, today is gone. Once tomorrow comes, today is lost forever.

Today is the most precious asset you own--and is the one thing you should truly fear wasting.

Why Morning People Rule the World

Morning people are more proactive – and therefore more successful in their professional lives — according to new research.

To paraphrase F. Scott Fitzgerald, the morning people are different from you and me – or so says new research.

Early birds are more proactive than evening people – and so they do well in business, says Christoph Randler, a biology professor at the University of Education in Heidelberg, Germany.

"When it comes to business success, morning people hold the important cards," Randler told the Harvard Business Review of his research, some of which originally appeared in the Journal of Applied Social Psychology. "[T]hey tend to get better grades in school, which gets them into better colleges, which then leads to better job opportunities. Morning people also anticipate problems and try to minimize them. They're proactive." (Not that evening people are life's losers: They're smarter and more creative, and have a better sense of humor, other studies have shown.)

Who is a morning person, by definition? Randler says it is someone who gets up at roughly the same time on weekdays as on weekends. He surveyed 367 college students (an age group not exactly famous for early rising) when they were most energetic and willing to change a situation. The morning people were more likely to agree with statements such as "I feel in charge of making things happen" and "I spend time identifying long-range goals for myself." (In the sample, the "evening people tended to sleep two hours later on weekends.)

Can you change type? "Somewhat," says Randler, pointing to a study where half of schoolchildren were able to shift permanently their wake-up time by an hour. Still, it can be tough, partly because half of your chronotype, as it's called, is determined by genetics. And just changing the hour you wake up may not change your inherent "morning-ness" or "evening-ness" In other words, getting up earlier will not automatically make you proactive.

Chronotypes also evolve over a person's life cycle: Teenagers are evening types; between the ages of 30 and 50, people are evenly split between morning and evening types; and people become morning types as they pass through their fifties.

Randler says the challenge for businesses is to "bring out the best from their night owls." He points to universities, which often do this successfully. (Randler is a morning person who gets up at 5 a.m. and works, whereas he has a colleague who arrives at work at 11:30 a.m. and stays until 7 or 8 p.m.)

But if morning people are ruling the world – winning the promotions and the top decision-making jobs – will night people ever get any concessions?

Says Randler: "Morning people are very capable of understanding the value of chronotype diversity. Remember, we're conscientious. This understanding probably originated far back in history, when groups comprising morning people, evening people, and various chronotypes in between would have been better able to watch for danger at all hours. Evening types may no longer serve as our midnight lookouts, but their intelligence, creativity, humor, and extroversion are huge potential benefits to the organization."

Overwhelmed With Network Marketing? Copy and Paste Your Way to Understanding.

If you are like me then you find yourself overwhelmed with the sheer volume of information out there regarding network marketing and how to be successful as a professional network marketer. I believe I have finally found something real and realistic to help minimize that overwhelming feeling.

First, a little history. I had been out of work for nine months when I came across an ad on Craigslist with a link to ZNZ. I followed the link. I liked the idea of the opportunity presented. It made sense to me. I signed up. I didn't hear a single word from my sponsor after I signed up. But, I needed something so I dug in my heels and started trying to figure out how to make it work on my own. ( http://cashtoday.mdc5deisgns.com -- if you are curious what ZNZ is)

At the same time that I was trying to figure out ZNZ, my Facebook timeline started buzzing with MCA, Motor Club of America. I spent some time researching MCA, watching YouTube videos, reading blogs, chatting with people on Facebook. It didn't take me long to realize that this was a product I could get behind, a concept I could easily embrace and profit from. I was very excited by the potential. Honestly, I still am. Completely.

I was still out of work, still sending out my resume 30 or 40 or 50 times a day and still getting NO call backs. I needed something. I took the plunge and ate ramen noodles for a week to invest the $39.90 needed to get started with MCA. I signed up under one of the most successful members of MCA because I wanted access to their training material. I have never had a one on one conversation about MCA with my sponsor. I was directed a training website and a files tab in a Facebook group in lieu of any one on one training. While there is a ton of information there, the one on one training a newbie network marketer needs was sorely missing. I was really disappointed by this but determined not to be discouraged and even more determined to be a better sponsor when my team started growing.

Even without that one on one, I managed to find people who were willing to spend time with me, talking one on one about what I was doing and how I could do it better. All the while that I was talking to these very kind souls, I was continuing on my quest for knowledge and success. I was reading everything my sponsor put up. I attended the training webinars and took notes. I watched the discussions and I offered help where I could. I was posting in groups, I was posting some classifieds, I was talking to my friends, I was making the videos.  Through all that and over a span of 5 weeks, I made three sales. That is my team so far. I love that little team but I still felt like I just wasn't getting it right. I knew it wasn't going to be hand over fist cash, but I believed it could easily be the equivalent of a full time income achieved from the comforts of my own home. There had to be something I was missing, something I wasn't doing right.

Turning to my sponsor did no good. Every question asked was answered with a link to read (which, usually I had already read). Then I found Copy+Paste=Cash.

While a lot of network marketers will sell their opportunity as a quick way to make some cash (usually this is not the case at all), CPC makes it clear up front that you will be required to actually put some effort into making their program work, but they give you every tool and instructions on how to use them every step of the way as well.

By the time you reach the conclusion of the program you will have attained the discipline and instruction to truly be a network marketing guru. Is MLM a Bad Word?

Ever been confused about how a “home business” works? Of course you have, so have we. Most people have heard the term MLM (Multi-Level Marketing) and usually at the end of that the word, “scheme” is added – giving the whole business model a bad name. Well…let’s change your negative perception and tell you how your Great Aunt Joan, actually earned that pink Cadillac from Mary Kay! It’s brilliant really…

Not only are “home businesses” or “MLM’s” very interesting, they are successful. Many of the longest standing organizations in this country have this business model. MLM is a marketing strategy in which the sales force is compensated not only for sales they personally generate, but also for the sales of others they recruit, creating a downline of distributors and a hierarchy of multiple levels of compensation. Most commonly, the salespeople are expected to sell products directly to consumers by means of relationship referrals and word of mouth marketing. Sounds legit right – so why the bad press?

Well MLM companies have been a frequent subject of criticism as well as the target of lawsuits. Criticism has focused on their similarity to illegal pyramid schemes (hence the “scheme” reference), price-fixing of products, high initial start-up costs, emphasis on recruitment of lower-tiered salespeople over actual sales, encouraging if not requiring salespeople to purchase and use the company’s products, potential exploitation of personal relationships which are used as new sales and recruiting targets, complex and sometimes exaggerated compensation schemes, and cult-like techniques which some groups use to enhance their members’ enthusiasm and devotion. Eesh!

However, as aforementioned, you may know people that sell products from Mary Kay, Avon, Advocare, Tupperware and the like (see more companies in our Featured Home Businesses section). You know people who sell these types of products because they believe in the products and the companies that stand behind them. These companies empower those who sell their products to actually establish their own businesses, selling the products. This is very attractive to many entrepreneurial-minded people who do not want to have a boss watching over them but also want some pre-established structure and support. Most MLM organizations provide a very robust infrastructure and great training as well as impeccable rewards (hello free cars and trips!).

I recently spoke with San Diego based, Vicki Martin, about her experience with Rodan + Fields. Legit MLM vs. Pyramid Schemes and Scams

I hear so many people saying that they are looking at MCA and seeing nothing but a pyramid scheme. Those people are not doing their homework.

In 1979, the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) handed down a landmark ruling. They found that one of the industry's founders, Amway was not a pyramid scheme. That ruling has paved the way for hundreds of MLMs to follow the FTC's ruling. Motor Club of America’s product marketing and business model is based well within the 1979 ruling based on the following below.

1. The Motorclub of America doesn't pay associates for simply recruiting new salespeople or associates. Selling and marketing the motor club membership is the only way an MCA distributor gets compensated for their efforts.

2. Making money through Motor Club of America is accomplished by selling memberships directly to consumers and by coaching your team of salespeople, also known as your downline.

3. Motor Club of America doesn't require its associates to purchase so called starter kits, or impose a minimum monthly quota of sales to stay a member of the company. The only requirement is that the associates be a product of the product which simply means that they not only sell the memberships but they are card holders as well and use the memberships in their daily lives.

4. Motor Club of America stresses that the main difference between a legitimate MLM business model and a pyramid scheme is that a legitimate MLM is focused on selling products, not recruiting more salespeople. In a legitimate MLM, it should be possible to make money by simply selling products directly to customers.

Be wary of anyone who tries to sell you on an MLM opportunity by flaunting their personal wealth. Realize that many of the people who claim to have made millions through the MLM industry have actually made their money selling books and videos on how to make millions through MLMs.

Bottom line: If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is.

Is MCA a Scam or a Real OPPORTUNITY...

I started hearing about MCA, Motor Club of America, the first part of August. A friend of mine started posting about it on his Facebook feed several times a day.

[  A little history. My husband lost his very stressful, but high paying job in rent to own in September of 2011. His best friend had gone into business for himself working in logistics and offered to bring him on board. He would have to build his own territory and customer base and would get paid a percentage of every profit dollar he brought into the company. The friend offered him a base salary until his customer base was developed. It was $1600 less than his job had been paying. That was the down side. The upside was that he would work Monday - Friday 8:00-5:00 and he could do the work from home. All good things. Plus I was still working and had just gotten a promotion and a raise so we could make this work. Then in October, I lost my job. I still didn't worry. I've never had trouble finding a job and I went to work pounding the pavement, responding to every help wanted ad I could find, talking to everyone I knew about finding work. My phone didn't even ring for interviews. This went on for nine months. We ended up on food stamps and trimming our bills down to the bare bones and retreating from any sort of real social life in an effort to just keep our heads above water. We moved to Georgia with some help from my husband's boss to try to start over. We've been here three months now. We don't have a car and I still don't have a job, even though I've been looking since the day we decided to move over four months ago. ]

So here I was with no car, in a new city with no money and having just as much trouble finding work here as I was in Texas. Then my friend starts popping this opportunity into my timeline and I answered a Craigslist ad that ended up being for ZnZ (for another post). I started searching for information on MCA online. I wanted to know if it was a scam, if it was just another get rich quick scheme.

What I found were real people just like me actually making money. What I liked most about it was that there was a valid and useful product involved (the membership packages) and that real and honest work was required to EARN the money I would be making. Also there is no cost to become an associate. All MCA asks of you is that you pay for two months of the service and become a member so that you can become a product of the product and have a stronger knowledge and experience with it. If you are a member you get the exact same package you'll be selling to others along with a free website and tons of training. Add all that to the training and expertise of your sponsor and the next thing you know, you're in business.... a real business that pays.

This was exciting to me. I couldn't wait to get started. But while I was doing my research and learning what I could about the company and the opportunity, things in our finances were getting worse. We just had two of the worst weeks of the 12 years we've been together. For the first time in my 36 years of life I went to bed hungry... more than once. It has been rough so to say that finding the $40 was difficult is a total understatement.

I took a risk and used $40 of the $100 we had set aside for groceries out of our last check and got my two months paid and got my foot in the door. After becoming a member and being allowed access to all the training and support that comes with that membership, I am floored completely by this opportunity! There is so much potential here.

The catch to it is that this is not a get rich quick scheme. It's not a scam. It is a valid product and business model that will set you up to have long term, sustainable, weekly income and open doors you may have never even had the opportunity to glance at otherwise.
